 Those Who Stayed Behind: Victims

ot all of the Liebmans emigrated to America. Many families stayed in Europe and lived out their lives in Slovakia - which, of course, was part of Czechoslovakia between the wars - or in other parts of Hungary. Most of them died untimely deaths at the hands of the Nazis.

Before World War II, about 135,000 Jews lived in Slovakia. About 40,000 lived in areas that became part of Hungary in 1939, and 5,000 emigrated before the war began. This left 90,000 Jews, or about 3% of the population, on the eve of the Holocaust. Under the Nazis, the Czechoslovak government soon initiated many anti-Semitic measures. Jews were expelled from governments jobs, then the military. Soon Jewish-owned businesses were taken over, and by 1941 Jews were forced to wear yellow armbands.

Deportations began in 1942, mostly for Poland, where victims were imprisoned in labor camps and ghettos and then sent to their deaths at Majdanek, Sobibor and Belzec. There were also direct transports to Auschwitz. Nearly 59,000 Jews were deported in 1942, and about 10,000 left Slovakia for Hungary, leaving only about 19,000, who had been granted exemptions for work deemed essential. After the 1944 Slovak uprising, however, Germany moved to exterminate all Slovakian Jews. About 12,000 were deported in 1944-1945. All told, 100,000 perished in the Holocaust.

The Liebman family lost many lives as part of the Nazi "final solution." Among those who died were 70 family members and  spouses. There were surely many more victims whose deaths were never documented. This page is a tribute to them all.
